The Weather

When you have several blogs that aren't quite ready, and you can't get them ready, what do you do? You write about the weather, throw in a few pictures, and call it a post. If you are a farmer or a senior, you love, love, love to talk about the weather. Every conversation will start with, "so what's your weather like". A quick check of the phone app keeps everyone up to date and ready for any conversation.

An early morning "Shelf Cloud"

Manitoba is known as "Windy Manitoba". Last Sunday, the winds were 40 km with gusts up to 80 km. Although, we have had an abundance of rain, there was dust storms happening everywhere. It was actually hard to believe, but I witnessed it. The poor plants that are just starting to grow are really getting a beating.

I had an interesting conversation at the gym. We were talking about the long grass outside the gym. I commented that there would be lots of hay. One of the guys at the gym said that he hadn't seen a twin or triplet set of fawns yet. That means that there won't be grass. Last year same thing and we all know how last year went. It just amazes me how the animals know, and their body responds.

A woman was sharing her experience the weekend before with four of her friends. They were out in grass and in one hour they had removed over 100 ticks between the five of them. Oh yah, ticks are loving this weather.

It seems to take very little for it to rain. Everything looks so lush right now, although we could do with some sun. Every year I am going to keep track of rain. Well, I was behind early because rain and snow came even before I got my rain gauge out. I have dumped 4 inches the end of May, another 1 inch and two days ago another 2 inches. I also have dumped a few smaller amounts. So, let's just say in less than a month we have had well over 7 inches of rain.

Mother Nature has been putting on a beautiful show. Since the end of May, we have had snow, torrential downpours of rain, unbelievable wind, hail, tornado touchdowns and very little sun. Great humidity creates great thunderstorms. Let's be honest, who doesn't love a thunderstorm which seem to be occurring often. There are frequent weather warnings on the phone, not to mention emergency alerts. To be honest, they are so frequent they have lost their importance. I have always said the one remaining thing that we can't control is the weather. Thankfully, because we are never happy about the weather, so what a mess it would be, for the person in charge. Mother Nature doesn't seem to care about what we think about her weather.

I have big plans to sit outside on my patio, enjoy the pool and warm weather. I have heard that the prediction for the summer is hot and dry. I have no idea who the predictor is or if they are accurate. We will see, but for now, enjoy your Wednesday.

Easter Baking

Easter is a holiday that is steeped with tradition and reflection. It holds a different meaning for each of us. Every Easter I reflect on how it was when I was a kid, way back in the dark ages, and how everything has changed so much. For many families it is a time to come together to celebrate the traditions that are meaningful to them.  Easter is a sacred time for Christians as they celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ . Easter is known as a  time for rebirth, hope and new beginnings.                                      I doubt anyone has a family memory that can trump the "Dixon Family Egg Hunt". My Dad was one of 10 children in his family. They were never all at home at the same time, but there were probably at least 6 or 7 kids on the egg hunt each year. Their dear mother would dye 14 dozen eggs with no food coloring. All I know is beets make red eggs. Dad would speak of h...

25 things to embrace in 2025

Here is a concept to think about today, "If you want 2025 to be good, make it that way". I read that and thought what a great blog post. The article included some suggestions, I picked out the ones I liked, added some of my own and developed a list. Here are 25 thoughts that may help guide you to make 2025 one of your best years.      1. Stop panicking, j ust let things happen. If you are someone who likes to panic this will be very difficult for you to do. I think what this is really saying is, let go of control. I have come to realize once I try to control a situation, the situation controls me. It takes on a life of its own, and before long I have lost all control of what I want.     2. Do what you want to do. Go for it, learn a new language, change careers, go on that trip. Your worst enemy is hesitation. This is paramount in retirement, one simply never knows what is around the corner, so do it while you can. As we age, we tend to talk ourselves out of...

"90"

Yesterday we celebrated my Mom's "90th" Birthday. If she is any indication of what being 90 is all about, it isn't going to be so bad. Mom loves conversation full of fashion, food and family. She dresses sharp everyday with matching jewelry, often Fifth Avenue. She loves her iPad and can manage her phone to talk or text. She lives with other seniors and enjoys their company. She has been a widow for 18 years; she has endured losing her home to fire and relocating to another town when she was 88 and a massive heart attack at 89.  Mom didn't want a public celebration, but it was a celebration none the less. It started the week before and I am sure we will cherish the memories forever. Nothing could have been more perfect than how we celebrated Mom.    I had planned for 4 years to do this on Mom's special milestone birthday. I asked people to get involved in "90 Cards for Carole". That certainly made for a fun week of anticipating the mail drop-off. It ...
