You will know when the time is right

In reflection, I have come to realize that most of my major decisions have been made with very little thought at the moment. Usually, I have developed a plan in my head, and when I get the sense that the time is right, I will implement the plan. I find when I put my plan and the right moment together, a decision is born.

Seventeen years ago, I bought my condo. I was living in an apartment at the time. One Sunday, I was sharing with a friend my plan about buying a permanent home. She knew of a new condo complex being build and suggested that we attend the open house that very day. So, away we went and checked out the show condo. That took 15 mins, and I told the realtor, I wanted one. I had no time to ponder; they were going like hotcakes. I am not one of those people that wanders all around town looking at places, when in fact, I had just seen what I wanted. I bought dirt as the building hadn't even begun. That was April 2008 with a projected completion date of November. On December 15th I moved in.

At that time, I didn't even know what a condo was. Let's say I had lots to learn and I did learn. The time was right to complete my plan to have a permanent home, the pieces were in place, and it happened. It was a divine intervention if there ever was. I have been forever grateful to my friend for taking me by the hand and introducing me to the life of a condo owner.

As a rule, I take very little time to make a decision. If I see what I like the search is over, I don't keep hunting. I buy glasses the day of my eye examination. They are usually the first ones I tried on. It takes about a minute to pick out nail polish for a pedicure. Buying clothing is easy; see it, like it, buy it. I use the "take back" rule more than I should.

I do have to come clean on something. I had to get stern with myself and apply one of my very own lines, "stop talking about it and do it". I need new tires. When you need new tires, it creeps up on you. You go from "soon" you need tires, to "your tires are nearly bald". I was pondering over this decision. My biggest problem is, I don't like buying tires. It has to be one of the most boring and expensive things to purchase. There are also an incredible number of options and way more details than I could possibly understand. Besides, no one is even going to notice. I have finally made the decision, "Firestone All Weather". I am not doing the switch over of summer and winter tires, it is a one and done when it comes to tires. Canadian Tire is the most convenient and most reasonable for me, the tires are ordered, the appointment to install is made and the tire drama is nearly over. The pain and suffering will then be in the past.

I do have a collection of slogans I use when it comes to decision making. If I am not deciding within a few minutes, I will "sleep on it". I have another one, "if you don't know what to do, do nothing". I used that one for a very long time with the tire decision. When I retired, I had the plan already in place, all that had to be done was simply, "name the date". The last guiding slogan I have is "once you make a decision, don't change it, make it work". All too often it is easy to go back on a decision. I have found it is easier to move forward with what I have decided, than go back to the thinking tank.

Have these little life slogans gotten me in trouble, absolutely. One thing I cannot do is ponder, unless it is buying tires, then I become a pondering maniac. I am just so grateful I have 100,000 kms before that mania starts again. But as a rule, I don't ponder.

I am spontaneous by nature and for some reason, I find it easy to make most decision. There are decisions in life that are much bigger than Firestone tires. In some situations, I just say to myself, "go for it". Other times, it has taken all of my lines and then some, to decide what is best for me.

The bottom line here is, if you are struggling with a decision, hang in there. I believe you will know when the time is right. A sense of calmness comes over you and it all unfolds from there.

When Pink is just another Color

Just  over a week ago, Waves of Hope hosted an awareness day. We called it "A Day of Hope and Education". It was decided in October that Waves of Hope would get behind a researcher at Brandon University. Dr. Majumder is working on early detection of breast cancer, through a simple blood test. She is also researching to predict treatment outcomes for triple negative breast cancer. TNBC is extremely aggressive and has few treatment options. Her work is to lower the resistance of the cells and make them more responsive to treatment. She is also working on developing treatment options that are not so toxic, but still just as effective when treating breast cancer.  Her dream is to find a cure for cancer.  Little did we know in October what April was going to bring.  It has been an absolute honor to spend time with Dr. Majumder and her husband who I call her wingman. Sujit is her lab manager and so much more. They are two of the most caring and wonderful people I know. The...

Celebrate Female Friendships

I have written about women and friendships many times, and here I am again. There are lots of catch words to describe friendships such as being in someone's tribe, BFF, sista or in a sisterhood. Some women have a large circle of friends, whereas other women are content with one dear friend that is there through every aspect of her life.    Every time the gals from my paddling team get together it is a celebration. We call it a practice, meeting, volunteering or whatever we choose for that night. But, in reality it a celebration of friendship and survival. Some of those friendships started in 1999 and others are only a couple of years old. Maybe it is the stories, but it seems like we have known each other for a much longer time. This group emulates sisterhood, and it is an honor to be part of it.    If I had to advocate for something, it would always be the strength of a woman. Women have learned how to be adaptable. Through their entire lives a woman's body goes thr...

Cancerversary

A C ancerversary is a definition that was created by Bestie which means a celebration to honor breast cancer survivorship.  It all began two years ago when I suggested that we should celebrate with a trip for what was going to be her 10-year mark of survivorship. She could pick whatever she wanted to do, and I would do it. We attempted to make plans, some as simple as a weekend in Winnipeg and some more elaborate like a cruise down the St. Lawerence. For one reason or another, we couldn't make anything happen. Life stepped in our way and said, "you aren't going anywhere", and we didn't for two years. Then out of the blue  I got a text from Bestie that said, "do you want to go on a Rhine River Cruise?". This was it; she had picked how we would celebrate and I was in. Yep, we planned what would be the biggest trip of our lives in a few minutes by text. That was nearly a year ago. There is considerable planning that goes into a trip like this. Our roles wer...
