I wasn't sure what I was going to post this week. I have several drafts started but I couldn't manage to finish one of them. As part of my morning routine, I went through my Facebook feed. I knew it would have something to write about. For some reason my feeds are full of Country Music Stars helping others financially and emotionally. I am one of those people that gets comfort and joy from seeing those pictures.
The one that warmed my heart was Blake Shelton sitting at the cemetery next to Toby Keith's grave. He was singing a song they had written together but they never got to finish it. It was the anniversary of Toby's death, and this is how Blake marked it. I am not sure how the picture was taken or how it hit Facebook, nor do I care. I just thought he was honoring a friend through music. Blake is human and it was clear he was missing his buddy.
During the horrible flood in Texas there were a number of pictures posted of the rich and famous helping out. Many were in boats searching. Others were holding children by the river, doing what needed to be done. Were there hundreds of other people doing the same thing, you bet there was. They did not get a picture taken, but I doubt they cared. I imagine that the actors, athletes and music stars would have preferred no pictures.
What is it about the Texas flood that has affected us so deeply? I think it is the little girls. Those beautiful faces that keep appearing on Facebook. The latest report is that 128 lives were lost and 150 are still missing. There have been disasters where thousands of people have lost their lives, but for some reason it didn't move me as much as this flood has. During the night a flood ripped through a camp with over 700 wee little campers, surrounding campgrounds and the community of people that lived near the river. There have been so many powerful stories of heroism and sacrifice about that day and the days that followed. Sadly, many didn't even have a chance to save themselves or others. Miracles happened as some victims were found alive in a tree or debris. It is inconceivable the helplessness they must have felt as they waited hours or days for someone to rescue them.
None of us know what the week ahead holds for us. There is so much about life that is out of our control, like floods, fires and death. Something we can control is being grateful for the good things in our life. Going into a week with a good attitude and doing for others is a great way to start. However, you will manage the next seven days, make it a great week.
I love stories and pics of others helping others too, Faye. In honour of those who are not alive to embrace this week, I will do my best to live it well. Thanks for the reminder.
