Favorite Things

I had a lovely time at Moose Jaw at our cousin retreat. The cousins try to get together once a year and we take turns being the organizer. This year it was my turn; it has been my turn for 3 years. For a variety of reasons, we weren't able to get together, but this year it happened for those that could make it. Moose Jaw should be so proud of how utilized their downtown is. They have embraced tourism in their city, and it is a wonderful place to visit. We enjoyed the newest tunnel experience, "Bunker 24". I would advise if you were going to go on this tour, read up on the Cold War. We went to "Hopkins Dining Parlor", toured the Canadian Forces base and the Yvette Moore Gallery. We spent many hours just hanging out at our B&B and all its beauty.

I took my job as organizer very seriously and utilized our Facebook page to keep everyone up to date. I suggested that everyone bring their "favorite snack". When the retreat members confused that they hadn't read the notification, I was somewhat perplexed. They had showed up with not only snacks but other food that included muffins, cheese, vegetables and fruit, without me even organizing it!

For me in true Faye fashion, taking my favorite snack, spiraled out of control. The struggle was real, I have no clue what my favorite snack even is, I like everything. I wanted to take something that others will enjoy, and the dilemma goes on. I go through the same thing when I have to take to a potluck, to many decisions. So, this is what I took: Uncooked Cookies, Ju jubes, peppermint patties, gumdrops and dill pickle chips. I have fond memories of Grandma's candy dish. I loved it when it had my favorites, peppermint patties at Christmas and orange and lemon gumdrop slices any time of the year.

The whole experience of taking a favorite snack made me realize I am an extremist when it comes to food, or perhaps everything. I may also be a micromanager when I am the organizer. I hope for many of you reading this you are thinking, "what would I take?". It's not that easy to make a decision believe me.

I started to think of what my favorite things are. As we get older, we are "okay" with whatever. It doesn't have to be our favorite, as long as it's somebodies. We will often make a favorite of someone else's when preparing a meal. I am not sure what my favorite meal even is. I like a roast chicken dinner, and a chili bowl made with a fresh bread bowl. I know I am going to be one of those seniors in a home who eats their dessert first, if they set it anywhere near me. I really like dessert!

There is one favorite thing that does stand ahead of so many other things and that is Coffee!!!!! I love coffee, black and strong is the best. Cookies are comfort food, and they go nicely with coffee. One of my favorite cookies is "Uncooked Cookies" as we called them in our family. In fact, my sister and I both took them to the retreat, hers were softer and better than mine.

My favorite color has always been orange, but pink is moving closer to the top. One of my favorite places I have visited was St. John's Nfld. Some of my favorite things to do are to "go for a drive", and organize people, places or things on paper. I can lose hours on a computer keyboard.

Another one of my favorite things to do is to have fun. I have noticed that I can create my own style of chaos. I like to think of it is a fun experience for those riding that wave with me. I do like to mix fun up with serious conversation and soul searching. I find it fascinating how people make sense of their lives and their beliefs.

This post is about favorite things. The one thing that I have learned as I write this is, you can't have too many favorite things. And you can't spend too much time enjoying your favorite things. They are your favorites for a reason.

Easter Baking

Easter is a holiday that is steeped with tradition and reflection. It holds a different meaning for each of us. Every Easter I reflect on how it was when I was a kid, way back in the dark ages, and how everything has changed so much. For many families it is a time to come together to celebrate the traditions that are meaningful to them.  Easter is a sacred time for Christians as they celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ . Easter is known as a  time for rebirth, hope and new beginnings.                                      I doubt anyone has a family memory that can trump the "Dixon Family Egg Hunt". My Dad was one of 10 children in his family. They were never all at home at the same time, but there were probably at least 6 or 7 kids on the egg hunt each year. Their dear mother would dye 14 dozen eggs with no food coloring. All I know is beets make red eggs. Dad would speak of h...

25 things to embrace in 2025

Here is a concept to think about today, "If you want 2025 to be good, make it that way". I read that and thought what a great blog post. The article included some suggestions, I picked out the ones I liked, added some of my own and developed a list. Here are 25 thoughts that may help guide you to make 2025 one of your best years.      1. Stop panicking, j ust let things happen. If you are someone who likes to panic this will be very difficult for you to do. I think what this is really saying is, let go of control. I have come to realize once I try to control a situation, the situation controls me. It takes on a life of its own, and before long I have lost all control of what I want.     2. Do what you want to do. Go for it, learn a new language, change careers, go on that trip. Your worst enemy is hesitation. This is paramount in retirement, one simply never knows what is around the corner, so do it while you can. As we age, we tend to talk ourselves out of...

Unbelievable

I am feeling very lighthearted as I write this post. What you are about to read is a collection of what we could call, "first world problems". It is going to unfold just like my conversations with my bestie, jumping from one topic to another at warp speed with absolutely no connection to the previous topic.  There are just an unbelievable number of perplexing things in life.  For instance, how can a dryer ball simply disappear. Lost forever in your home, never be to be seen again. Or, how can you have a grocery list in front of you yet miss the very thing you went to the grocery store to get. The only answer to those questions is, "because".  I would be amiss if I didn't use this time to speak of the unbelievable January weather. I often describe the weather as bipolar and this January the weather went right off its medication. When the weather is off its meds, it goes up and down the thermometer like a maniac.  At least when it is extremely cold you don't...
