The Last Sunday of 2024

I think that it goes without saying that time flies. How on earth can it be the last week of the year. I feel a year starts off slowly. January and February can be long months depending on their mood and what they think we should endure for winter. The year starts to gain momentum in the spring. Summer soars by and the rest of the year is at full throttle. Which brings us to the last Sunday of 2024.

When we hang our new calendar and look at the year it will have the significance of being a quarter of the way through the 21st Century. I remember December 31, 1999, and the fear we had the world would shut down. Of course, nothing happened and here we are asking, "how can we be going into the 25th year of this century. Another inconceivable thought for today.

It will be clear as you read this post, that it is not going to flow, it will be just random thoughts about random things. For example: do you ever look in the mirror and think, "who is that?". Do you see a person that used to look like you but now has gray hair and wrinkles in areas that we didn't even knew could wrinkle? Not to mention some sagging around the jaw. Many have told me that they see their mother looking back at them. I love to remind myself that with age comes wisdom. Wisdom is one of the best things anyone could possibly have, it goes well with gray hair, sagging and wrinkles.

I feel we all have our concerns about the way the world is. We worry about our children and grandchildren, living in the world that we were part of making. My theory is that children are growing up in an environment that is familiar to them. It is not familiar to us, but for them they will find a way to adapt in the world as they know it.

Sunday is usually a quiet day to start the week off. The first thing I do in a new week is post a blog. The next thing is making a list of the things I am going to do in the next 7 days. That list often gets lost along with my plans, but it doesn't stop me from making it. For most days, I have adapted the "three things a day" rule and I will continue to do that in the new year. I make a list of 3 things I plan to do that day. They are outside my usual routine. I love the sense of accomplishment and when I finish the third thing it either gives me energy to continue and do more, or that's it for the day. It is a great little system.

I am not a person that does a lot of reflection at the end of a year. I will probably take the time from now until the New Year to focus on what I can make happen in 2025. I'm not doing resolutions; I like "wish list" or "goals" better. At this point not much has come to mind. I know I am tired of things. I am tired of my clothes; I am tired of opening the closet in the hall and seeing unused things inside. I am definitely tired of the corner cupboard that has all my containers that can't keep themselves organized. I may have over bought food which I will share with others. I have a bedroom that I need to paint. I think I have a substantial list that will keep me busy in the first couple of slow months of 2025.

In closing, I am sharing the following quote. I thought it said it best. Set out to do three or four things this year with gusto. I love the word gusto; I am kind of a gusto person. Let's go for it and at least start by thinking of three things you can do with gusto in 2025.

  1. I like the 3 things a day list and think I will adopt it too. Happy New Year, Faye.

When Pink is just another Color

Just  over a week ago, Waves of Hope hosted an awareness day. We called it "A Day of Hope and Education". It was decided in October that Waves of Hope would get behind a researcher at Brandon University. Dr. Majumder is working on early detection of breast cancer, through a simple blood test. She is also researching to predict treatment outcomes for triple negative breast cancer. TNBC is extremely aggressive and has few treatment options. Her work is to lower the resistance of the cells and make them more responsive to treatment. She is also working on developing treatment options that are not so toxic, but still just as effective when treating breast cancer.  Her dream is to find a cure for cancer.  Little did we know in October what April was going to bring.  It has been an absolute honor to spend time with Dr. Majumder and her husband who I call her wingman. Sujit is her lab manager and so much more. They are two of the most caring and wonderful people I know. The...

Celebrate Female Friendships

I have written about women and friendships many times, and here I am again. There are lots of catch words to describe friendships such as being in someone's tribe, BFF, sista or in a sisterhood. Some women have a large circle of friends, whereas other women are content with one dear friend that is there through every aspect of her life.    Every time the gals from my paddling team get together it is a celebration. We call it a practice, meeting, volunteering or whatever we choose for that night. But, in reality it a celebration of friendship and survival. Some of those friendships started in 1999 and others are only a couple of years old. Maybe it is the stories, but it seems like we have known each other for a much longer time. This group emulates sisterhood, and it is an honor to be part of it.    If I had to advocate for something, it would always be the strength of a woman. Women have learned how to be adaptable. Through their entire lives a woman's body goes thr...

Cancerversary

A C ancerversary is a definition that was created by Bestie which means a celebration to honor breast cancer survivorship.  It all began two years ago when I suggested that we should celebrate with a trip for what was going to be her 10-year mark of survivorship. She could pick whatever she wanted to do, and I would do it. We attempted to make plans, some as simple as a weekend in Winnipeg and some more elaborate like a cruise down the St. Lawerence. For one reason or another, we couldn't make anything happen. Life stepped in our way and said, "you aren't going anywhere", and we didn't for two years. Then out of the blue  I got a text from Bestie that said, "do you want to go on a Rhine River Cruise?". This was it; she had picked how we would celebrate and I was in. Yep, we planned what would be the biggest trip of our lives in a few minutes by text. That was nearly a year ago. There is considerable planning that goes into a trip like this. Our roles wer...
