Mantras Successful People Live By

I simply love mantras. Whenever an article appears with the word, "Mantra" in it, I am all over it. Mantras are words or phrases that you repeat to yourself. They can help to calm down your thoughts and replace them with a strong belief. Mantras can aid in meditation and prayer.

There were several mantras in the article that I appreciated. One stood out in my mind, "don't be quick to give your opinion". It is good to get other people's opinion before you give yours. In other words, listen before you speak. When I worked at the university, we had lots of meetings. A discussion could take on a life of its own and go on for some time. At the end, one of my favorite people, who had worked at the university for a long time would give her opinion. She had listened to the discussion without saying a word. Of course, time stood still as we all listened to her wisdom and the discussion was done. We all agreed that her opinion was now our opinion because it made so much sense.

"Stay open to possibilities and opportunities by not turning down chances for change and success". This mantra helped me to have the life I have now. If someone said to me, "you should do that", I did it. I have to say it was an interesting journey, but it worked. When you can't make decisions for yourself, listen to others, they will guide you.

I appreciate the mantra's that successful people live by. Bill Gates's mantra is, "keep things simple". Oprah learned from Mayo Angelou, "when you know better you do better. Learn and get better". Mark Cuban was told by his dad, "there are no shortcuts. Do the work, out-work, out-think and out-sell your expectations. Hard work is the answer to success". Richard Branson mantra is, "never look back in regret, move onto the next thing".

Following Mom's 90th birthday, we were reflecting on how generous and kind people were. Mom said, "the Dixon family need to remember others and do more for them". For her she was overwhelmed with such a feeling of love from others. What her point here was, even though we feel we are generous, we can do more. More birthday cards, more phone calls, more text messages, overall, just remember people. Make them feel as special as they have made her feel.

I like to encourage others when they are facing a difficult situation to grab onto a mantra. It can be as simple as, "just breathe". One well used line is "one day at a time" or "this too will pass". This doesn't happen as much anymore, but I would often find a mantra going through my head when I was struggling with something. I would never be able to count the times I have said to myself, "you can do this". I didn't realize at the time it was a prayer for myself, I just knew it gave me strength and courage when I needed it.

A mantra will bring out the positive energy inside you. If you are struggling right now, grab onto a line, create a sense of wrapping yourself with amour. Putting your focus into a few small words and repeating them will help move you forward. Always remember, "you got this, girl".

When Pink is just another Color

Just  over a week ago, Waves of Hope hosted an awareness day. We called it "A Day of Hope and Education". It was decided in October that Waves of Hope would get behind a researcher at Brandon University. Dr. Majumder is working on early detection of breast cancer, through a simple blood test. She is also researching to predict treatment outcomes for triple negative breast cancer. TNBC is extremely aggressive and has few treatment options. Her work is to lower the resistance of the cells and make them more responsive to treatment. She is also working on developing treatment options that are not so toxic, but still just as effective when treating breast cancer.  Her dream is to find a cure for cancer.  Little did we know in October what April was going to bring.  It has been an absolute honor to spend time with Dr. Majumder and her husband who I call her wingman. Sujit is her lab manager and so much more. They are two of the most caring and wonderful people I know. The...

Just put your head down and do it!

I recently attended a competition at my gym. By attending I mean I simply watched and volunteered. The CrossFit competition was called the "Grit Games" which explains how grueling it was. The competitors were in a zone and did their absolute best to finish what they had started. The competition was a timed event and as they neared the end of their time and the tank appeared to be empty, they just put their head down and did it. Not one single person quit, that was not an option.   Waves of Hope recently had a practice day which started in the morning. We got in the boat, and there were a few more waves than usual, so the decision was made to paddle to the other side of the lake, where it was calmer. It is moments like that where I am in absolute awe. The steersperson is in position at the back of the boat calling the shots. The coach has her voice turned up. The long-time paddlers are set and ready to go. I have to say one more time, I have the utmost respect for the long-tim...

Final Requests

I was just rolling through Facebook as I often do, when this touching post caught my eye. A final request was made by an elementary schoolteacher in Georgia. Before she passed, she asked that instead of flowers that people bring backpacks filled with school supplies to her funeral. Her final request resulted in hundreds of backpacks from friends, family and strangers. Children she had never met will have what they need to shape their future.  At the time of death, people want to do something. Often it is a donation to a charity either identified by the family or of the donor's choice. I have to admit, I am poor at giving to a memoriam, I'm not sure why. But I would certainly buy and fill a backpack. I don't think I am alone when I say, I love creativity. I am also all in when it is for a cause and especially if children are involved.  This woman is leaving a legacy behind. She just wanted to help children as the last thing she did. She had no idea the magnitude of her reque...
