Did you know?

Did you know there is an amazing organization that will provide a quilt to someone that has been diagnosed with cancer. It is called "Victoria Quilts of Canada". To receive a quilt, a friend or family member sends in a request. The quilt will arrive in the mail. The organization is dependent on donations. The quilts are donated, but there is a cost of $25 to mail them, which can be up to $4000/month. Every province has their own base, Neepawa is the one for Manitoba. Donations can go directly to your own provincial site. They have been in existence for 24 years and just recently made the remarkable feat of delivering their 100,000 quilt. I have always felt I had my finger on the pulse of these types of organizations, but I knew nothing about this one. What a wonderful thing to have a lovely quilt to wrap around you in your darkest days.

Did you know in Manitoba or possibly across Canada, if a man is diagnoses with prostate cancer, and is over 70 years of age, he is not given the option of surgery. The life expectancy of a man is 80 and they are given a non-surgical plan, such as chemo and radiation. There are some exceptions, I'm not sure what they are.

Did you know that the day of the Humbolt accident the bus driver took a different route than usual leaving town. It delayed them by 5 minutes.

Did you know that family can overturn an organ donation decision. Logan Boulet was one of the Humbolt hockey players that was killed in the tragic bus accident. He had signed his organ donation card and shared his wishes with his parents. Because of Logan's selfless decision, he helped save 6 lives. Logan was an inspiration too many and because of his actions, signing of donor cards soared. Logan's family did not overturn his decision, but it was an option for them.

Did you know that a safe injection site is a supervised injection site with trained professionals. Their goals are to reduce overdose deaths, decrease the transmission of infectious disease and connect people with treatment centers. Those using the safe injection sites are not given drugs, they use their own and are given in a hygienic manner.

Did you know that the top addictions in Canada are alcohol, cannabis and cocaine. Among drug users in Canada, cocaine is the most commonly used drug accounting for almost half of illegal drug use. Drug use is consistently high in Prairie cities. Prince Albert has the highest level of meth and cocaine in it's wastewater per capita in Canada.

Did you know per capita, the most dangerous city in Canada with the highest violent crime severity is Winnipeg. Winnipeg also has the second highest homicide rate. It is followed by Regina then Saskatoon. Red Deere has the highest non-violent crime rate in Canada. The safest city is Quebec City. The most dangerous province is Saskatchewan.

I am closing this post with some of my favorite ""Did you know". Did you know that the people that are usually the strongest are the most sensitive. Did you know the people that exhibit the most kindness are usually the first to be mistreated. Did you know the one who takes care of others all the time is usually the one who needs care of the most. Did you know the three hardest things to say are: I love you; I am sorry and help me.

When Pink is just another Color

Just  over a week ago, Waves of Hope hosted an awareness day. We called it "A Day of Hope and Education". It was decided in October that Waves of Hope would get behind a researcher at Brandon University. Dr. Majumder is working on early detection of breast cancer, through a simple blood test. She is also researching to predict treatment outcomes for triple negative breast cancer. TNBC is extremely aggressive and has few treatment options. Her work is to lower the resistance of the cells and make them more responsive to treatment. She is also working on developing treatment options that are not so toxic, but still just as effective when treating breast cancer.  Her dream is to find a cure for cancer.  Little did we know in October what April was going to bring.  It has been an absolute honor to spend time with Dr. Majumder and her husband who I call her wingman. Sujit is her lab manager and so much more. They are two of the most caring and wonderful people I know. The...

Final Requests

I was just rolling through Facebook as I often do, when this touching post caught my eye. A final request was made by an elementary schoolteacher in Georgia. Before she passed, she asked that instead of flowers that people bring backpacks filled with school supplies to her funeral. Her final request resulted in hundreds of backpacks from friends, family and strangers. Children she had never met will have what they need to shape their future.  At the time of death, people want to do something. Often it is a donation to a charity either identified by the family or of the donor's choice. I have to admit, I am poor at giving to a memoriam, I'm not sure why. But I would certainly buy and fill a backpack. I don't think I am alone when I say, I love creativity. I am also all in when it is for a cause and especially if children are involved.  This woman is leaving a legacy behind. She just wanted to help children as the last thing she did. She had no idea the magnitude of her reque...

Traffic

I recently drove south of Brandon at 10:00 AM. I was in no hurry and that was a good thing because I got behind a vehicle going 60 kms in an 80 kms speed zone. As we doodled along a big truck pulls right up behind me. I was hopeful he knew I was not the cause for the speed reduction. Shortly, the slow-moving vehicle turns, and I am now the lead car. I quickly arrived at the speed limit and perhaps even above. For others it must have looked like I was towing the truck behind me, he was so close. I was closing in on another set of vehicles going slow and I knew the truck behind me was not going to be happy. In a blink of an eye, out he goes to pass me, there is oncoming traffic so close I was slowing down to let him in. He's not done; he guns it and passes the car ahead of me as well. He then swoops in between that car and a semi. Now the semi appears to be pulling him he is right behind him. Thankfully, we finally hit the passing lane, and the truck is gone like a rocket. I hope the...
